Frocks Off…it’s about dresses, it’s about
women…it’s about stories woven into women’s dresses as tightly as
the fabric itself…revealing dresses…dresses that reveal women’s feelings
and memories, joy and sadness, hopes and fears, love and loss.
All women have a memory related to a dress. There is a presence
in them never forgotten. ‘Frocks Off’ refers to the metaphorical
shedding of layers as the women’s stories are shared with the audience.
Frocks Off is an Australian SBS series of documentary interstitials
that promises to deliver delicate, ephemeral stories of women.
Every girl has a favourite dress; a theme that is explored by this
documentary series, Frocks Off. The series sees women
from all walks of life – women in the spotlight, indigenous women,
even women who were born as men – relate in their own words stories
about the most important dress in their life.
Whether passed down over the generations, lovingly sourced for a
special occasion or worn as an unforgettable occurrence unfolded;
these dresses are all attached to a magnificent memory – and the
viewers’ journey is guided by personal reflection and poignant,
stylized recreation of the events of the past. From dancer Julieanne,
who had her mum buy her all-important debutante dress (with disastrous
results), to June-Mary whose flirty red dress caused a tragic fatal
accident, to Jamel, who began his journey to becoming a woman by
trying his mother’s sun dress on in secret, to 7-year-old Ruby,
who just loves to spin around and around and around in her pink
dress…the stories are as moving as they are familiar to anyone holding
onto memories from the past.
