White Americans and Europeans don yokes and chains as modem day abolitionists and walk former slave routes to experience what slaves may have felt and offer an apology for slavery, provoking intense reactions from those they meet.

Viewers experience what a slave may have felt and join a passionate and radical international team determined to eradicate racism and heal the wounds of slavery. They watch as people retrace history along former slave routes by walking as captured slaves once walked: bound in yokes and chains. White Americans and Europeans walk in the shackles of slaves, while Africans and descendants of slaves walk alongside in this unusual and symbolic form of apology. Cameras capture this highly controversial and provocative action, complete with startling confessions and raw emotion as the team begins to identify with what slaves may have experienced. Intense reactions of gratitude, mistrust, hatred, vocal opposition and support greet them as they Journey.

From profound and moving public reconciliation events to private and candid behind-the-scenes glimpses of team members and the struggles they face as they prepare and then march with yokes and chains, this unprecedented real-life series breaks all barriers and tackles the real issues no one wants to talk about: racism and the legacy of slavery. Viewers watch the healing begin as whites and blacks release buried emotions of pain, sorrow and anger as they begin to forgive and reconcile with each other, changing forever their perception of each other and themselves.

Highly personal and emotional scenes are interwoven with historical and educational stories of slavery, along with today's headline news to bring awareness to such current issues as the shocking race and class issues uncovered by Hurricane Katrina, the disturbing race riots in France, the heartbreaking AIDS and poverty crisis in Africa and the growing modem day slavery problem. The team marches through the U.S., the Caribbean, South America, and then on to Africa and England to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire.
