The Over/Under is the true story of the hard-working crew of the Turks & Caicos Explorer II, a luxury liveaboard dive vessel. On a 125-foot boat, there’s only so far you can go when things go wrong or you want to strangle your co-worker. Whether it’s fires, broken props, missing dinghies or coworker quarreling, everything must be handled behind the scenes. Guests aboard these boats pay thousands of dollars to live in style for a week and enjoy their ultimate dive vacation. The last thing they want out at sea and away from the hustle of their busy schedules is drama or tension.
Working 16- to 18-hour days, the seven-person crew deals with an ocean-full of obstacles to keep things running smoothly while at sea. Things break—compressors, engines, toilets and even limits to patience. But at the end of the day, they are a family. And the only way to make each week a success for the guests is through teamwork and dedication to the job.
“You either love life at sea or you don’t. You’re either a people person or you’re not. There is no middle ground with this job. It’s not a gig you can phone in. You get sick? You find an odd day off to get well. This is not a job for the lazy. There’s no time. This boat and its itinerary need constant maintenance. And that’s just when things are going smoothly. Don’t like your bunkmate? Too bad. We barely have enough space to live in as it is. Get over it. You learn to coexist out here. We do what we do because we love the water and we want to help everyone who comes on our boat to go away just as in awe of the ocean as we are. We are responsible not only for their safety but their pleasure. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
